Woodbridge Township in Middlesex County, New Jersey, has a long history. It was granted a royal charter on June 1, 1669, by King Charles II of England, making it the oldest original township in New Jersey. The sixth-most-populous municipality in New Jersey as of the 2010 Census, Woodbridge has approximately 100,000 residents within its 24.5 square miles.
At the intersection of the Garden State Parkway and the New Jersey Turnpike, Woodbridge is one of New Jersey's major crossroads. It's a 40 minute commute to Manhattan as well as a 40 minute drive to the Jersey Shore.
Woodbridge Township includes 10 distinct, but unincorporated, sections -- Woodbridge Proper, Avenel, Colonia, Sewaren, Iselin, Fords, Menlo Park Terrace, Keasbey, Port Reading and Hopelawn. Each of these areas has its own central business district and its own character, and they all share in government services as part of the Township.
Woodbridge has an extremely diverse housing stock, ranging from small affordable cape cod and ranch homes to large multi-million dollar estates. The majority of homes are 40 to 50 years old. New homes are being built with regularity, as older homes are raised and replaced with larger new homes. The town has over 20 major condominium complexes, and over 8,000 rental apartments.
Recreational opportunities in Woodbridge can be found in over 20 parks. The largest is the 179-acre Middlesex County-owned Merrill Park off the Middlesex-Essex Turnpike. It contains four tennis courts, two basketball courts, three baseball diamonds, two softball diamonds, three gazebos, a soccer field, a football field, nine picnic groves, four playgrounds and a petting zoo. The Woodbridge Community Center on Main Street has meeting rooms, a full-sized hockey rink, a roller rink, a pool, a exercise room and a basketball court.
The Woodbridge Township School District serves students in kindergarten through twelfth grade. The district's three high schools offer more than 150 courses, including Advanced Placement, college preparatory, business, vocational and cooperative work/study programs.
